report and with us from waution, jared bernstein, former economist for joe biden. it's good to have you here. jared, i start with you. as we look at these numbers, is this a true game changer for the president? >> it certainly helps. i mean, this month's decline in the unemployment rate that you have been talking about from 8.1% down to 7.8%, that's the good kind of decline in unemployment because it came from a lot more people getting jobs. if you recall back last month, i was sitting in this chair telling you that the decline in unemployment from 8.3% to 8.1% was illusory. it tells you, as i said, more people came into the job market and got jobs. but it also tells you that the monthly surveys are volatile. however, i think there's other evidence in this report, perhaps we can get into it, that shows some momentum moving in the right direction. the pace of employment growth appears to be accelerating in the payroll survey as well. >> ron, i want to ask you about jack welch's tweet about the books basically being cooked. you know, he's a ge pioneer. we know him well around 30 rock. >>
about the economy. they went after joe biden for his gaffe on saying the middle class has done poorly under the president, but i think, again, they're trying to do things in this tactical way that just hasn't worked for them so far and i think every day they're not having mitt romney out forcefully explaining what the president has done on the economy, is not a great day for them. now, he's in a better place than a lot of the pundits have suggested but i don't really think they have days to waste on things like this and the backlash against it was so strong. when drudge tees something up, even though he tilts right and even though a lot of people denigrate him, it gives the republicans an opportunity to dominate a news cycle. when they cry wolf with a 5-year-old video, it undermineds something so effective as a delivery mechanism over the years. >> i want to open this up to our panel here. karen, the debate, structure of the debate tonight, three segments on the economy, one segment on health care, one segment on the role of economy. no question on vintage youtube clips which is a tot

towards mitt romney. i now think there is an enormous amount of pressure on joe biden next week as he goes into the debate with paul ryan. after that 2004 first debate debacle it was dick cheney. it will be interesting to see how this sets up. >> lawrence? >> governor o-mal mgovernor, yo candidate get up there. some people feel mitt romney dominated by bringing more energy to it. how did you see it? >> well, i think the president has always had a certain dignified reserve and i think that's one of the admirable qualities about the president. as i was watching the debate i think what mitt romney really needed tonight was a big game changer. he needed to address the observation that he hasn't had any specifics for all of these great promises. you know, $5 trillion in cuts but it won't add to the deficit, trust me i'll tell you later. eat cake, lose weight. so i don't think he got the game changer he needed tonight. i do think the president was particularly strong, though, in getting governor romney to admit that he does want to turn medicare into a voucher program and i also believe the pres

and there. >>> an amazing story. want to go to vice president joe biden he's exchange in charlotte, north carolina. 15 electoral votes up for grade. >> they put two wars on a credit card. refusing to pay for them. i introduced the legislation to pay for the war. number two they added a new prescription drug entitlement that they didn't pay for. and then they added a $1 trillion tax cut for the very wealthy on top of that. now, they -- those are the facts. the end result of all that was by the time we were elected they had in eight years doubled the national debt, that clock, doubled it and in addition to that they had the slowest job, private job growth since world war ii under this policy. and by the time the president sat down behind that famous desk the resolute in noble office within a week of sitting down our economists told us mr. president you're going to have to deal with a $1 trillion debt this year because there's nothing you can do about it. the budget was passed back october. and so ladies and gentlemen so much for their credibility on the debt, but what did it produce for us?
